Background of the Study
Infant feeding practices play a critical role in the growth and development of children during their early years. Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF), defined as feeding an infant only breast milk, is widely recommended by health organizations due to its numerous health benefits, including optimal growth, protection against infections, and cognitive development (Johnson et al., 2023). Mixed feeding, which involves the combination of breast milk and other foods such as formula, is common in many parts of the world due to cultural practices, lack of awareness, and economic constraints. In Kaduna State, Nigeria, the practice of exclusive breastfeeding remains low, with many mothers opting for mixed feeding as an alternative (Adeoye et al., 2024).
While both feeding methods have their merits, the impact of exclusive breastfeeding versus mixed feeding on infant growth is not well understood in the context of Kaduna State. Studies have shown that infants who are exclusively breastfed have a higher likelihood of achieving optimal growth compared to those who are mixed-fed (Oduyemi et al., 2023). However, there is a lack of comparative studies focusing on the specific effects of these feeding practices on infant growth in Kaduna State. Given the importance of infant growth in ensuring long-term health outcomes, this study seeks to explore how exclusive breastfeeding and mixed feeding impact infant growth in the region.
Statement of the Problem
The problem this study addresses is the limited research on the comparative effects of exclusive breastfeeding and mixed feeding on infant growth in Kaduna State. Despite the well-documented benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, many mothers in the state continue to engage in mixed feeding, potentially compromising infant growth and development. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the effectiveness of exclusive breastfeeding compared to mixed feeding in promoting healthy infant growth in Kaduna State.
Objectives of the Study
To compare the growth outcomes of infants who are exclusively breastfed versus those who are mixed-fed in Kaduna State.
To identify the factors influencing the choice between exclusive breastfeeding and mixed feeding in Kaduna State.
To assess the role of maternal education and socio-economic factors in infant feeding practices in Kaduna State.
Research Questions
How does exclusive breastfeeding compare to mixed feeding in terms of infant growth outcomes in Kaduna State?
What factors influence mothers' choice of feeding practice (exclusive breastfeeding versus mixed feeding) in Kaduna State?
How do maternal education and socio-economic status impact infant feeding practices and growth outcomes in Kaduna State?
Research Hypotheses
Infants who are exclusively breastfed exhibit better growth outcomes compared to those who are mixed-fed in Kaduna State.
Factors such as maternal education, income, and cultural beliefs significantly influence the choice between exclusive breastfeeding and mixed feeding in Kaduna State.
Maternal socio-economic status is positively correlated with the likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding in Kaduna State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on infants in Kaduna State, comparing growth outcomes between those who are exclusively breastfed and those who are mixed-fed. It will involve both urban and rural areas within the state. Limitations include challenges in tracking and measuring infant growth accurately, variability in the types of complementary foods used in mixed feeding, and the potential for bias in maternal reporting of feeding practices.
Definitions of Terms
Exclusive breastfeeding: Feeding an infant only breast milk, without any other food or drink, for the first six months of life.
Mixed feeding: A feeding practice that combines breast milk with other foods, such as formula, cow's milk, or complementary foods, before the infant is six months old.
Infant growth: The physical development of an infant, typically measured through parameters such as weight, height, and head circumference.
Socio-economic status: The social and economic position of a mother, determined by factors such as income, education level, and occupation, which can influence feeding practices.
Maternal education: The level of education attained by the mother, which can impact her knowledge and decisions regarding infant feeding practices.
